Cake sizes in Malaysia get quoted two different ways — inches across, or kilograms — and the two do not map onto each other in any obvious way. A 5-inch cake is 0.6kg. A 7-inch is 1kg. Nobody tells you that, so you end up guessing.
Here is the conversion, how many people each size actually feeds, and which of ours matches.
The short table
Ini panduan saiz kek — dalam inci, kilogram, dan berapa orang.
| Size | Weight | Feeds | Best for | From |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 inch · 5 inci | 0.6 kg | 4–6 | Two people, or a small family table | RM90 |
| 7 inch · 7 inci | 1 kg | 10–12 | A birthday at home | RM120 |
| 9 inch board · bites | 1.2 kg | 30–40 pieces | An office pantry — nobody has to cut it | RM135 |
| 2-tier | 4 kg | 60–80 | A whole floor, or a large event | RM410 |
Inches to kilograms
The two systems measure different things, which is why the conversion is not intuitive. Inches measure the diameter of the tin. Kilograms measure the finished weight, including filling and frosting.
Because area grows with the square of the radius, going up two inches roughly doubles the cake:
- 5 inch → 0.6 kg
- 7 inch → 1 kg
- 9 inch → around 1.2 kg as a board of bites, more as a layered round
This is also why a 7-inch is not "slightly bigger" than a 5-inch. It is nearly twice the cake for a third more money.
How many people does each size really feed
Serving counts vary wildly between bakeries because they assume different slice sizes. A wedding-style sliver and a birthday slice are not the same portion. Ours assume a normal birthday slice — the kind someone actually wants to eat, not a wafer.
5 inch — 4 to 6 people
Two if you are being generous, six if you are cutting carefully. The right size when the occasion matters more than the volume: a birthday for one person, a thank-you, a small table. Our 5-inch range starts at RM90.
7 inch — 10 to 12 people
The default birthday cake. If you are hosting at home and you do not know the headcount, this is the safe choice. Our 7-inch cakes start at RM120.
9-inch board of bites — 30 to 40 pieces
Not a cake you cut. A 1.2kg board portioned into squares, which is the practical option for an office because nobody has to find a knife, plates or a moment when everyone is free. Cake bites and brownies from RM135.
2-tier — 60 to 80 people
A 4kg cake. This is floor-sized. It needs notice, and it needs somewhere to sit that is not a desk.
Buying for an office
The commonest mistake is buying by cake size instead of by how people will eat it.
A 7-inch cake for twelve people works at a table. The same cake for twelve people in an office often does not, because there is no table, no knife, and no single moment when everyone stops. Boards of bites and cupcake boxes exist for exactly this — they are portioned before they arrive.
If you are ordering for a floor rather than a room, count pieces, not slices.
Ordering the right size
- Round up when the headcount is uncertain. Leftover cake is a smaller problem than a short one.
- Count pieces for standing events, slices for seated ones.
- Bigger is cheaper per head. A 7-inch at RM120 feeds twice as many as a 5-inch at RM90.
- Check the lead time on large sizes. Most of our range is same-day if you order by 6:00 PM, but tiered and hand-decorated cakes need a day.
